LB ROOTERS OFF TO TREMENDOUS START
Bill DeFilippis has coached the varsity soccer team at Long Beach High School to three
Nassau County championships all in the ‘90s. His last title came in 1995. Now six years later
he. would like to do the same. And his plays have the ability to go far in the playoffs.
After 10 games, the booters are 6-0-4, all thanks to a strong defense and solid goaltending,
especially by Angel Rivero, who along with defenseman Osman Majia and forward Yossi
Calderon came to the school last May.
“The newcomers plus the returnees are the reasons for our great start,” DeFilippis said.
The better returnees include Michael Pa)Acio and Chris Griffin and co-captains Ryan Sauerman and Zack Abbot.
Abbot is a sweeper and Sauerman is a stopper.
“Rivero didn’t start in our first two games,” said DeFilippis, who coaches three sports at Long
Beach High School. “Then we put him- in as goalie and since he’s done an excellent job.
“Defense has been the key. We posted four shutouts and we have the ability to win the one goal
games. We’ve been playing hard.”
While Long Beach can’t boast about its high school varsity football team that is under .500
except that the boys are trying, it sure can be proud of its playoff-bound varsity soccer squad.
FRANZESE HEADS SOCCER TEAM
Alex Franzese, an all-County mid-fielder on the varsity soccer team at Oceanside High School,
is trying to duplicate his performance as ajunior, in this his senior year.
The co-captain is playing for a new varsity coach in Chuck Phelan, who handled the junior
varity team last year.
“It’s a new year and the players are getting used to my system,” Phelan said. “Our strategy is to
play a passing game. But it has to be a team effort. We are playing well and starting to jell.” Oceanside is in a
Conference with such schools as South Side, Lawrence, Port, Washington,
and Calhoun.
