ON THE ROADS

Almost every weekend there's a competitive road race somewhere on Long Island or nearby whether it be a short distance one, or a long distance one. The big race coming up is the Long Island Half-Marathon and the Long Island Marathon on May 6.
This weekend marks a 5-mile race at Alley Pond Park, staged by the Alley Pond Striders in Bellerose, Queens. It is part of the MAC Grand Prix series and set for Sunday. The age group race with plenty of awards goes through Alley Pond Park and on the Vanderbilt Motor Parkway. the gun goes off at 9:30 am with the fun run for kids and 10:00 am for the 5-mile race.
For further information call 718-454-3492 or 516-437-8715.
Then on Sunday morning, May 12, the Safe Child/Healthy Child 5K Run and Race walk and fun run for kids is set for Jericho High School.
And later this month on Sunday, May 27, the City of Long Beach will conduct its 10-mile Trophy Run and 5K run through the streets of Long Beach. The start of the race is five short blocks from the registration area, the Recreation Center located on West Bay Drive and Magnolia Blvd. For further information call 516-431-5533 or 431-3890.

Paul Mwangi's debut in College Point marked a tremendous success.
The 33-year-old resident of Ossining went out at a five minute pace for the first mile, slowed down a bit to a 5:07 pace, and spurted out after the second mile and easily captured the 23rd annual Queens Half Marathon, conducted by the New York Road Runners Club and the College Point Road Runners Track Club. The event marked the seventh time it was staged by the NYRRC.
Originally from Kenya, Mwangi, winner of the Eamonn Coghlan 5K in Elmont last August, covered the 13.1 mile event two weeks ago in 1:06:32.
Michael Slinsky of Wappingers Falls, also in upstate New York, placed second in 1:08, one spot ahead of Charles Kelly of Saratoga Springs.
"He (Mwangi) was gone after the first two miles," Slinsky said. "I had a bad race for the first half and then ran faster. Maybe I was tight."
The initial resident from Nassau County to finish was Ramon Hernandez, who ran a 1:19:37 for 26th place overall in a field of 3173 entrants.
